How do I choose a good research topic?

Answer

When you're just starting to search, remember that you don't have to have your exact topic picked out. Research questions emerge as you learn more about your subject and figure out what you want to explore.

We advise that students start broad (with the overarching topic or theme you're interested in/assigned) and narrow down to your question/thesis as you learn more. This can also be useful, as you will see what research has already been done on your topic.

If you are having trouble finding information on your chosen topic or narrowing down your topic to a research question, please reach out to a librarian.
